Interesting and Unusual Photos Part 3

I think the 3 most important suggestions for a photographer to remember from the paintings I viewed here are to look for lines in nature, make your picture tell a story, and to use good lighting.
Here is my favorite painting of all of the ones I viewed:

I wanted to find a picture that mimicked the photo above. I found one and here it is:

I do feel like the photographer followed the suggestion of depth fully and that is the main reason I enjoy looking at the photograph.

Photograph source: The Daily mail - here

I feel like photos of simple things in nature, like flowers on a tree, or photos with depth are the most interesting styles that I want to do.

Note: I had to post Part 3 before I posted Part 2 because one of the websites I was using was under routine maintenance.

Unusual and Interesting Photos Part 1

1. I think Christian Ruhm's work is interesting in the way he made them. It is appealing to the eye and it is not super conventional. I like some of it. The Eiffel Tower (above) is my favorite.

2. I think that Christian took the photos with multiple exposures while leaving the camera in the same spot them merged the photos together.

3. I don't know of any buildings in the surrounding area that I could take interesting photographs similar to Ruhm's. However, I think that the Seattle Space Needle in Seattle, Washington would be a good pick. Also, the Washington Monument in Washington D.C. is would make a good photo.

You can find more of Christian Ruhm's work here.

Academics & Community Service

My favorite photo from the Academics & Community Service section was titled Junior Year and it can be found on page 15. I picked this photo because it was visually appealing and I liked the use of dark and light in this photo. The rule of thirds, simplicity and lines are used in this photo. You can find more photos here.
I could probably take photos like the ones I looked at today in a science classroom. I might visit my science teacher's classroom to take pictures. As a photographer, I will get a nice angle and catch the action in order to make the photos like the ones I saw today.

Filling the Frame

This photo fills the frame with the most amount of interesting things. There are the excited student, the bubbles flying everywhere and one of the student's arm reaching forward. That is why this photograph fills the frame the best. You can find this photo and more here.

Action & Emotion

This photo is the most emotional. The students have their heads down and are holding hands which shows a bonding. They are circled around the pole in a serious manner. That is why this photo is the most emotional. You can find this photo and more here.

The Story

This photo shows how some students are feeding the homeless. It shows the story by showing the people getting fed smiling which means they are grateful. aIt shows the students, the food and the fed and those are all the elements that are needed to tell the story. You can find this photo and more here.

Great Black and White Photographers Part 2

Roy DeCarava was born in 1919. He passed away in 2009. He attended the Washington Carver Art School to learn about art. He originally started photography as a way to take pictures of things he was going to paint later but he ended up enjoying photography even more and became a photographer. Most of his pictures were of african americans in different situations.

Here are some of my favorite photos of his:

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

The story about photo ethics (link here) is about how photos are often altered in newspapers and magazines. It shows a few examples, most of them in the Middle East. Then the article goes on to show some examples from other areas of the world. Most of those editors and photographers were fired. The story shows how not all aspects of photo editing are ethical.

I think that sometimes photo editing is ethical. However, I only think that editing is ethical in a factual newspaper or magazine/periodical if it is color correction or in some way making the image better without changing the image too much. Photo editing on anything else is okay although it should be done well.

Modified Photo

I think this photo is the most unethical of all of the altered photographs that I looked at after reading the article. I think this because the two photos this composite used show different stories. This picture shows the soldier reaching out his arm in almost a friendly gesture. However the photo where the man with the child is in front of the people that the background of this soldier came from shows the soldier holding his gun with both of his hands in a demeaning manner. That's why this photo is the most unethical of all the ones I saw.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This photograph is the photo editing job that I consider the least unethical of all of them. Giving the woman a tooth job makes her appear more real and it doesn't change the story of her sextuplets. It does no harm and makes the woman a little more approachable in my opinion. That is why I don't think it is a bad as the others.

Photo Shoot Reflection

1. I had trouble trying to find things that represented the word happy and with camera angle the most while trying to get the photos of my first four prompts.

2.  I found myself thinking the most about focus while shooting my photos.

3. If I could do the assignment again, I would hold the camera more steady and apply more framing.

4. I would continue to shoot at interesting angle and not pose my shots.

5. I ended up actually achieving the rules regarding lines, avoiding mergers, simplicity and the rule of thirds.

6. I am interested in shooting those same props again because I like how they can be interpreted any way.

I like how most of her photos represented the rules of photography. I also liked how the photos showed her personality. She could have worked on interesting angles a bit more, however.

Avoiding Mergers

This picture has no merger.

The woman pictured above is not interacting with the background and therefore isn't creating a merger.

However, this picture has a few mergers.

The posts in the background and the smoke on the ground are mergers because the are sticking out of peoples' heads and obscuring their feet.

Framing

The staircase on the left and the people on the right give the firefighter a frame and thus bring attention to him.

Balance

Because the man is holding the woman, this photo is well-balanced.

Lines

The differing shades of grey vertical lines of the building behind the man bring the eye to him.

Rule of Thirds

The fire fighters are in the bottom left corner of the "tic-tac-toe" box. This makes the image appear dynamic.

Simplicity

This photo has only three main objects in it which is what makes it follow the rule of simplicity.

The Camera

1) The camera obscura effect is where an image is projected. It is achieved by having a tiny hole in one wall of a dark room. The outside light is focused through the hole and projected upside down onto the wall opposite the hole.

2) In the 17th century high quality lenses were made because of a higher comprehension of optics by Isaac Newton and Christopher Huygens.

3) Film was added to the camera by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1827.

4) Modern cameras still have light pass through a lens and expose on a film much like Niépce's camera.

5) Digital cameras use an electronic sensor called a CCD instead of the old plastic film that was used before it to capture images.

6) In Auto mode, the camera is in control of the exposure and flash. In Program mode, the user can control the exposure, flash and a few other features.

7) Portrait mode is used for taking pictures of people. It blurs out the background by using the aperture lens which is the fastest available lens setting.

8) Sports mode is used for taking pictures of fast moving objects. It freezes the action by using the highest shutter speed.

9) The half press lets the user focus the camera and set up the shot.

10) The symbol for no flash means that the flash is disabled. It is used when the user wants the photo to be taken in natural light.

11) Auto flash is the mode where the camera controls the flash and uses it if it thinks the shot needs more.

12) If there is too much light in a photo, it will appear washed out.

13) If there is not enough light in a photo, it will appear too dark.

14) A stop is a relative change of light in photography.

15) The new planet is one stop brighter if there are two suns instead of one.

16) The new planet is one stop brighter if there are four suns instead of two.

17) A longer shutter speed allows there to be more light in a photo.

18) A shorter shutter speed allows there to be less light in a photo.

19) The aperture controls how big the opening is on the way to the film.

20) You can increase the aperture to allow more light by having a smaller F-stop when adjusting it.

First Day Photos

I like the idea behind this photo but I don't like the photo itself. The photo is out of focus and a little blurry. I picked this photo because I liked the flowers there. Unfortunately, I didn't really capture that.

I like this photo because it makes sure you know what you are looking at. It is a good photo because the subject is a little off-center but still in the foreground. I chose this photo because I thought it would look nice in my collection. I think this photo is one of my better ones in this shoot.

This trashcan is an interesting photo. I am not sure whether or not I like this photo. What makes it interesting is what I chose to take a picture of. It is done well because it is shot at a slight angle. I don't know why I chose to take a picture of this.

This picture was done to remind me of my first day of school was like. I like this photo because there is one person to the side walking into the building. It's sort of howI felt- all alone. It is a good picture because it shows all the imagery.
